The river trade on the Hawkesbury River was
of great significance to the early growth of Sydney and played
an essential role in the lives of settlers along the river
for 150 years. Ask anyone in Sydney today what they know about
the Hawkesbury region and it will be the great Hawkesbury
River and school holidays spent water skiing! But there is
so much more than just water skiing and fishing!
Surrounded by National Parks, dotted with
secluded river communities, the Hawkesbury River is navigable
for over 100 kilometres with 1100 kilometres of foreshore
fringe. You could cruise and explore these waters for weeks
and still not see it all. Spend a peaceful overnight anchorage
in a hired boat or a waterfront house and wake up to the call
of Kookaburras, Whip Birds, Sea Eagles and the lapping of
the tides.
CRUISES
Experience the many moods of the Hawkesbury and Colo Rivers
on a cruise - morning tea cruises, evening sunset and cocktail
cruises, historical cruises, or just plain relaxing and sight
seeing along the fantastic shores of the Hawkesbury.
HOUSE
BOATS
Or do it yourself on a house boat. Set you own itinerary and
be your own captain! The Hawkesbury region boasts more than
5 houseboat operators offering boats with berths from 2 to
12 people. Great for family holidays or even for a group of
friends. The Hawkesbury is a safe and scenic sport for a houseboat
holiday.
RIVERBOAT
POSTMAN
Cruise with Australia's last Riverboat Postman along the magnificent
Hawkesbury, visiting isolated communities that still rely
on this service for their mail service.
FISHING
Sitting back, with the magnificent scenery of the Hawkesbury
Valley around you - you could be a million miles from anywhere!
Whether it be from the river bank or from a boat, the Hawkesbury
has abundant fish life - from mullet to flounder, flat head
to snapper - an anglers dream!
EVENTS
Though the Hawkesbury River is known for its tranquility,
twice a year the world renown water ski and jet boat races
known simply as the 'Bridge to Bridge' disrupt the peace in
spectacular fashion. These events held in November and May
each year attract contestants from all over the world to compete
in races that start from the Hawkesbury River Bridge, Brooklyn
and finish at the Hawkesbury River Bridge, Windsor some 110
kilometres upriver.
